Site of worst mining disaster in the U.S. since 13 miners were killed by an explosion at a mine near Brookwood, Alabama, in December 2001, and the worst in West Virginia since 1968’s Farmington No. 9 Mining Disaster, which resulted in the passage of the Mine and Health and Safety Act of 1969.
